The Big Vote

So, you've found your way to the Big Vote section of the b_line website.

That must mean you’re thinking of standing for election on the Derbyshire Youth Council.

Read on to find out what it’s all about:

  • The Big Vote is the election process that selects the members of Derbyshire Youth Council.

  • It has been running since 2002 and takes place every two years.

  • Youth council members represent and are elected by young people from schools, colleges and their communities.

  • Members hold a two-year ‘term of office’.

  • The 2012-2014 Derbyshire Youth Council will be made up of 62 elected members between the ages of 11 and 18 from across Derbyshire.

  • Nineteen of these young people will be voted into the youth cabinet.

  • Youth council members attend a minimum of three meetings plus six district forums a year. Youth cabinet need to be available for an additional 10 meetings a year.

  • Members represent other young people and have a say about issues affecting them.

  • Other roles for youth council members include representation on district youth forums, attendance at Children’s Trust Board meetings and county conferences and representation on the UK youth parliament.

  • Derby city has its own youth council called ‘Voices in Action’, which is run separately by Derby City Council. You can email adele.styles@derby.gov.uk or telephone 01332 256240/07967 008420 for more information.

So, if you think you’d like to nominate yourself to stand as a candidate, fill in the manifesto and the nomination form in the nomination booklet, print it off and hand it in at school.
