Safe virtual space

Are you savvy on myspace or bebo?
Is your virtual space really safe

You want to have your very own space in the massive world of the web to mix with your mates and get to know new people. We don’t blame you but we don’t want you attracting the wrong type of attention either! And when the second step of registration on these community sites asks you to upload your fave piccies you could be dipping your toes in very hot water from the beginning.

Your piccies!

What pics do you go for? School mates having a laugh at the weekend? Your band doing your biggest gig ever? Comedy baby shots? These are all pretty innocent but research shows more and more teenagers, especially girls, are uploading pics of themselves in beachwear or clothes that show off more than just a pretty face and its not just you people that can access these community sites so would you really want a dodgy old man looking at you in that way?

If it gives you the heebie jeebies just thinking about it then how about if these weirdos knew exactly where you are? That’s just plain scary. When you register and fill in your personal details make sure you are clear about which bits will appear on the site alongside your pictures.

Your personal details!

Many sites have age restrictions and only allow members over 13 or 14 but all sites recommend that members under 21 should post their first name and initial instead of full name. It’s best to keep other personal info to a minimum too. There is no need to say what form you are in at school or where you like to hang out at the weekend. Stick to debating why the Fratellis are your number one band right now or who is your true Soapstar Superstar!
