We all know that Christmas is an expensive time of year, and that part-time jobs just don’t seem to pay enough to cover it. So here at b_line, we have come up with some money-saving present ideas that we think will inspire you (and your bank balance).

- Instead of buying presents for your brothers, sisters, mum and dad, why not do a family secret Santa? Everyone’s name goes into a hat and each family member pulls one out but keeps it a secret from everyone else. You set a budget before-hand and then buy a pressie for whoever’s name you pulled out. That way you only have to buy one present and it’s fun trying to keep it a secret.

- If you’re feeling creative, why not make gifts for people? An easy one is to buy a set of drinking glasses from the supermarket and decorate them with glass paint (you can get that from hobby and stationery shops). It makes a really unique present and shows that you’ve put some thought behind it. If you’re stuck for ideas, there are loads of internet sites that offer great tips for homemade gifts.

- Another way to save money, and the environment, is to not send Christmas cards. Let’s face it, you only ever give them to the people you see loads anyway, and the ones that need posting end up sitting in your bedroom until next year. So save your pennies and the trees and send e-cards by e-mail instead.

- Do you know anyone who loves food? Well a perfect gift this Christmas would be some homemade chocolates. They are so easy to make and it looks like you have gone to some real effort. And being the chef, you obviously have to try them before giving them to people! See our yummy chocolate truffle recipe.

- A great present for your mum would be to make gift vouchers that she can exchange for jobs around the house. You could make the vouchers on the computer for things like walking the dog, doing the dishes, hanging out the laundry and so on. Mums love that sort of stuff and it costs you absolutely nothing except a bit of your time.

So all you need is a bit of time and imagination and you can have cheapo merry Crimbo!
